Just because retailers think Thanksgiving should be the kickoff to the shopping season doesn't mean the average American agrees. Actually, according to a newHuffington Post poll, 62 percent of Americans think businesses should close on Thanksgiving so workers can have the day off, while only 27 percent said that they think stores should feel free to stay open if there is demand for it.
It isn't just about the employees forced to work over the holiday, either. Only 13 percent of people said they want retailers to be open on Thanksgiving, while 74 percent said they prefer that businesses wait till Friday to open. This new Thanksgiving sale trend might not be such a great idea after all, because 80% of Americans have absolutely no plans to shop on the holiday.
With all the bad press and the negative response from potential shoppers, what could the motive be for retailers like Macy's, Walmart, K-Mart and Best Buy to open their doors during the holiday?
